Investment advisor certification India is a certification given to individuals who have passed the examination conducted by the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) and acquired the necessary qualification, experience & training requirements as prescribed under SEBI Investment Advisers Regulations, 2013.

The NISM-Series-X-A: Investment Adviser (Level 1) Certification Examination has been designed for persons seeking registration with SEBI as an investment adviser under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013. The examination tests basic knowledge in various aspects of advisory services such as legal and regulatory requirements, advisory processes and client relationship management, financial planning and portfolio management, and capital market policy and practices.

Become A Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) In India

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has made it easier for professionals to start an investment advisory firm. If you’re a Chartered Accountant, Cost Accountant, Company Secretary, or an MBA with a specialization in Finance, you can apply for registration as an Investment Advisor. There is no need to have any additional qualifications.

To get started, you must:

  1. Get a Certificate of Registration from SEBI
  2. Register your firm or company with the Registrar of Companies (ROC). You must open a Demat account to hold client assets
  3. Register with the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) and/or Central Depository Service Limited (CDSL). This is mandatory if your business model involves dealing in securities
  4. Obtain an Income Tax Permanent Account Number (PAN)
  5. Register your business with the Professional Tax Department and obtain a professional tax registration certificate

Documents for Registered Investment Advisor (RIA)

Before starting the RIA, you must be an existing sub-broker, dealer, or corporate agent. After that, you need to fill up the application form and submit it to SEBI. The application form is available on their website. In addition to that, you must attach the following documents:

  • Proof of identity and residence
  • Proof of educational qualification
  • The Proof of experience in the securities market
  • Proof of registration as a sub-broker, dealer, or corporate agent
  • Details of office space – address proof and photographs
  • Declaration stating that the applicant is not disqualified under any provision of law or regulation/bye-law in force by virtue of which he can’t operate as an investment advisor
  • An undertaking that all provisions of Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act 1956 will be complied with.

Who can Apply for “SEBI Registered Investment Advisor”

The following persons can apply for registration with SEBI as investment advisors:

  1. Individual, i.e., natural person, who is a citizen of India.
  2. Partnership firm, where all the partners are citizens of India.
  3. Body corporate is incorporated in India and registered under the Companies Act, 1956, and has its principal place of business in India.

The criteria for registration is as follows:

  • The minimum qualification required to obtain registration under these regulations is graduation in any discipline from a recognized university or equivalent.
  • All applicants must pass the National Institute of Securities Markets certification examination.
